Fill summer gaps
Pull out spent annuals after they're past their best, but fill the gaps straight away to avoid unsightly bare soil in your garden. Drop in standby late-season flowerers like dahlias and cannas for an instant injection of colour. Add a little compost before planting to boost the soil and water well.
