Time to celebrate Dads

Published: 14th June, 2017

This Sunday is Father’s Day, a day to honour and celebrate fatherhood, paternal bonds, their influence in society and all the special qualities possessed by our Dads.

The celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe is known to date back to at least the Middle Ages, and it is observed on 19th March. But, according to historical accounts, Father’s Day as we know it was first celebrated in Washington State in 1910 when Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired whilst listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in her local church. Her father was a widower who raised his six children as a single parent. She felt it was unfair that he, and other fathers like him, should not get any acknowledgement for their wonderful parenting. She successfully campaigned for a special day to be established to pay homage to Dads and this was set as the third Sunday in June.

Other countries soon picked up on the idea of Father’s Day including the United Kingdom.

A ‘Netmums’ survey commissioned for Father’s Day a couple of years ago, declared that the most important job for Dads is “to be a role model and show how a good man acts for both boys and girls”. The study, found that 88 per cent of parents agreed that the role of fathers had changed rapidly over the last generation, with a man’s career increasingly seen as being of secondary importance to his family.

So, it’s time for us to celebrate these champions of our family! Thank him for all he does and make this Father’s Day one to remember with a gift Dad will love from Henry Street Garden Centre.
